The blueberry, a treasure for the eyes

Throughout our lives, our eyes are put to the test by the use of screens, the sun, etc…
Our visual capacity therefore declines little by little. Today, an ingredient of interest has already proven its effectiveness in optimising vision: bilberry.

Rétine

RETINAL PIGMENTS

The pigments of the retinal epithelium are responsible for the synthesis of many growth factors used in the maintenance of the integrity of the photoreceptors of the retinal endothelium. These pigments are essential for good visual acuity, optimising retinal vascularisation and protection against oxidative stress.

HOW DOES BILBERRY WORK IN A FOOD SUPPLEMENT?

Among the 40 most consumed fruits and vegetables, the blueberry contains the most anthocyanins, which are natural blue pigments. They help to improve visual acuity by limiting oxidative stress.

The anthocyanins contained in bilberry will boost the secretion of photosensitive pigments contained in the rods of the retina, the rhodopsins. This is why bilberry’s antioxidant properties make it a relevant active ingredient for optimising the eye’s sensitivity to light.

FOCUS PIGMENTS

Other known pigments include zeaxanthin and lutein, which limit damage to the retina and lens caused by oxidative stress by capturing free electrons. These pigments will also filter blue light and ultraviolet light in order to protect the photoreceptor cells of the eye.

Did you know that?

It is said that this berry was consumed by British fighter pilots during the Second World War before their night raids to improve their night vision… so if you want to sharpen your lynx eyes, go ahead!
